| The Mimbres people lived about 1000 years ago in southwestern New Mexico and then disappeared quite suddenly. By the 1920s, archeologists and others began to dig up wonderful samples of black and white pottery in that area - bowls mostly - covered in sophisticated but whimsical designs of animals, birds, insects, and great geometrics. While not much is known about the Mimbres civilization, you can tell by this wonderful art that they were people who understood joy. These two Mimbres fish are the first designs in what will be an extensive collection of Mimbres images. |
