| Making a Customized Album Journal |
|
| What You Will Need:
An album type book which is bound with screw posts. We got this one at Michael’s for around $8 and there were several sizes and colors to choose from. There were plain covers as well as these with gold lines. We figure we can use Lumieres on this one later when we know its contents better, and hide those lines.

Paper:
Any paper you choose will do. We chose Arches Cover in cream because it is s thick, rich paper that has a soft hand and will take most media without warping. It feels luxurious as well. (Available at fine art stores and online from places like Dick Blick, Cheap Joe’s etc.) We used one sheet to make twelve journal pages.
Tools:
Bone Folder, 1/4" hole punch, pencil, screw driver, paper trimmer (optional)

Step One:
Find the screw post binding.
This is a very common binding in albums and scrapbooks and a good one because it is expandable and easy to access.
Find the flaps inside the front and back covers and lift them. They are usually folded flat but not attached to the inside of the covers.
|
|
 |
|
| The binding post has two parts: the post which is like a hollow tube with a head, and the screw which goes into it.. You will need to hold the posts steady in the back while unscrewing the screws in front. Unscrew and remove both posts. |

Step Two:
Remove the pages that came with the album and the spine protector thing. Retain the two cardboard spacers with holes in them.
Now, this particluar album said it was for 5"x7" pages, but that referred to the size photos each page would hold. Because this will be a journal, we can decide our own page size. We found that 5.5"x 8.5" pages fit inside the covers very nicely.

Step Three:
Our sheet of Arches Cover was 22"x30". We decided to tear instead of cut for deckled edges all around. This soft, pliable paper will tear easily after folding.
Make the measurements as follows, fold and burnish with the bone folder. unfold and carefully tear along the fold, pulling gently in a horizontal direction.

Instructions for Tearing Twelve Pages from a 22"x30" Sheet:
Measure 4.5" along each of the 30"sides and make a small pencil mark right on the edge of the paper (measuring from the same end, obviously). Fold that 4.5" section toward the center, while lining up the edges and making sure your fold is right on the pencil mark. Keeping the edges aligned, flatten the fold with your finger across the rest of the sheet. Then burnish the fold with the bone folder, open again and tear away the 4.5"x22" piece - leaving a piece 22"x25.5".
Using the same method, measure and tear the 25.5" length into three pieces 8.5"x22" each.
Fold and tear each of these pieces in half into 8.5"x11" pieces and each of those in half into 8.5"x5.5" pieces. You should end up with twelve 8.5"x5.5" pages.
