I first encountered Kathy Kaberline’s designs at Guadalupe’s Fun Rubber Stamps here in Santa Fe, and it was love at first sight. She has a most exciting Southwestern collection and, beyond that, a broad range of images that run the gamut of subject material and style. They reflect an “incredible lightness of being” as the saying goes. Kathy has taken that diverse range of subjects, some familiar, some not so familiar, and given them a twist all her own.

A great example is her “square” approach to the butterfly and dragonfly designs shown to the right. As is the wonderful design-y look of “Rudolf’s Shadow” (below) - just when we thought we would never again see a new and different Christmas image! That is the gift Kathy has - the ability to attach a whole new personality to familiar icons.

I had to meet this lady, if only by phone. We chatted, and here is her story:

Kathy was and is a painter (oils and acrylics) and she also did murals - both in private residences and commercial establishments. When she initially “met” rubber stamps, her first thought was “Why? What would I do with them? - I can just draw whatever image I need.” And then came thought #2 - the life-changing one: “As a matter of fact, I could draw rubber stamp images!”

And she was off and running.

“I just jumped in head first! In fact, I often tell people that I jumped off a cliff and I’m building wings as I go.

I've had a lot of help building those wings too. People in this business are so willing to share their experience, and I've met so many wonderful people and made great friends.

It’s a ball. I am having so much fun, I have to remind myself that I’m working!”

I asked Kathy about her plans for the future:

“Well, I’m not out of ideas yet! I plan to continue to develop them and share them with as many people as I can.”

And some of those ideas are for Tracers. Kathy is one of the “charter” rubber stamp manufacturers to jump on the bandwagon, as it were, and develop image sheets for this new art form.
